Bringing “Joy” to Children Through Books

Joy is a champion in her community. She is the Miss Popularity Youth+ 2022 award winner, an award dedicated to youths living with HIV/AIDS who have overcome the shame and ridicule often associated with people who receive that diagnosis, and how they have turned their diagnosis into positive social change in their communities. She spends her time promoting transformative conversations on appropriate relationships and sex education among children of age in Uganda. She partners with Reproductive Health Uganda and Girl Not Brides Alliance to make a difference in the lives of children. This time, she partnered with STEPi and joined STEPi Coordinator Uncle Books (Michael) on a roadtrip together, promoting peer to peer interaction about literacy, reading, education and appropriate relationships to encourage a growth mindset for the children to ensure academic excellence. “Sharon’s Song” is her favourite STEPi book because it can help her campaign for appropriate relationships. She says, “It is amazing! Sharon’s story and the songs included is perfect for both boys and girls.” Indeed, "Sharon’s Song” has been STEPi’s best loved story by children in rural schools throughout Uganda for its simple message on appropriate relationships. The beautiful and colourful illustrations and the artistic creativity also make this book a favourite. The children connect with the book because it acts as a mirror for their daily lives and experiences at school and at home, and it shows them how to respond to bad friends and inappropriate relationships with courage and wisdom.

Joy’s plan is to support Accelerated Reading programs at different schools in the Mid-Western districts of Uganda. Joy is one of the many champions and influencers STEPi is working with in rural schools and communities across Uganda and South Africa. They are equipped with the right information and tools to help children love reading, learning, and getting an education by including reading program follow-ups to build and nurture a sustainable reading culture in those regions. At STEPi we believe raising emotionally and intellectually strong children is a collaborative responsibility for all adults.
